A nutritional program aimed at identifying women, infants, and children who are nutritionally "at-risk" and helping them to prevent low birth weight and premature births, iron deficiency anemia, failure to thrive, obesity . WIC is aimed at pregnant, breastfeeding (one year) and postpartum (six months) women, as well as infants and children up to five years of age. Women's and children's centres promote breastfeeding and provide special nutrition classes, individual counselling, regular follow-up with high-risk clients, health assessments, referrals to health and social services and immunizations.
