Senior Citizens of Kodiak, Inc. (SCOK) was incorporated on October 30, 1973 to offer a full range of health, education, and social services to persons aged 60 and over on Kodiak Island. Services began from an apartment at the Cherrier-King Building and several years later they moved into the community room at Bayview Terrace Apartments, a residential complex for the elderly where they gather and deliver meals at home, meal transportation and home services began. The number of seniors participating has grown to the point that in 1985 a new 8,000 square meter senior center was built. Since then, new programs have been added to the services. In 1991, an adult day program, Island Cove, was opened at the Bayview Terrace Community Hall. This program, which is funded by the Division of Seniors and Disabilities Services, has the potential of 18 clients who have Alzheimer's disease, recover from a stroke, or who need monitoring or socialization throughout the day. The Island Cove Adult Day Program moved to the lower level of the remodeled Kodiak Senior Center in 1996. The Family Care Program was added in 2003 and serves the elderly and their caregivers with information, references, rest and support. Senior In Home Services were added in 2006 and provides care coordination and work service for the elderly. Transportation is offered through the Kodiak Area Transit System (KATS), a public transportation system serving 14 non-profit areas of which SCOK is the lead agency. The rate is $2.00 per trip.
