The Taylorsville Senior Center is a joint operation of Taylorsville City and Salt Lake County. The facility is owned by Taylorsville City and operated by Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services staff. The site of the Taylorsville Senior Center was originally Plymouth Elementary. The planning for the Senior Center started around 2001 by Taylorsville City Mayor Janice Auger. Construction was completed in August of 2002. The grand opening and ribbon cutting was held September 26. The open house was attended by County Mayor Nancy Workman, City Mayor and Taylorsville City Council members. A group of marines helped with the flag raising and the master of Ceremony was Channel 5 news Bruce Lindsey. During the first month the Senior Center signed up around 1000 new members. After 12 years, a 3500 sq. ft. addition was completed in September 2014. This new space provides more room for exercise classes, expands the exercise equipment room and opens up more space for other classes. The David and Grace Harman Family Home was the boys' home of Pete Harman, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, which he donated to the city for use as a senior recreation center. The house was originally built in 1918 and renovated in 1989 before Herman turned it over to the city. Today, the Harman Senior Recreation Center provides community resources and programs for West Valley residents age 60 and older that promote dignity, support independence, encourage community involvement, and stimulate physical, mental, and emotional health. The citizens of the Kearns township pushed and pushed state representatives and Salt Lake County to build a Senior Center in Kearns. Senator Eddie P. Mayne, his wife Senator Karen Mayne, senior citizens of Kearns and Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services collaborated together and ground was broken in 1995 for the new building on 4851 West and 4715 South. The 10,000 square foot building opened its doors on July 23rd 1996 with rooms for fitness classes, arts classes, reading, music, dining and entertainment. A few years later an extension was added for a library, computer lab, multipurpose room and more office space. In 2008 the Kearns Senior Center changed its name to the Eddie P. Mayne Kearns Senior Center in honor of the late State Senator Eddie P. Mayne who was a strong advocate to get the Center built. In 2014 the Center achieved National Accreditation. This prestigious national certificate puts the Eddie P. Mayne Kearns Senior Center on the list of more than 120 senior centers who meet the standards developed by National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC). These are centers that are held up as models for others to follow. Completing the accreditation process showed our Advisory Committee, staff, members and community leaders that our senior center met the highest national standards. As a new generation looks to redefine retirement, the Eddie P. Mayne Kearns Senior Center is prepared to reflect a more empowered vision of aging. Today the Center continues to serve as a second home to many of the members. The friendly, welcoming environment has helped the Center become one of the busiest in Salt Lake County...
