The vision of a few individuals in the late 70's became a reality in the 80's. Ground was broken on September 26, 1980 by Board members John Fields, Vivian Woods, Aletha Hart, M.W. Betts, Ether Bono, Vic Losson, Helen Hunolt, Anna Mae Eliiot, and Lucille Pierceall. The Monroe City Nutrition Center began services to residents age 60 and over and handicapped adults 18-59 in parts of Monroe, Marion, and Ralls county in January of 1982. The Monroe City Senior Nutrition Center provides meals, personal care, homemaker chore, respite, information and assistance, socialization, educational and recreational activities to elderly and handicapped adults. We serve Monroe City, Palmyra, Perry, Philadelphia, Center, and the surrounding rural area. Nutrition and in-home programs reduce the isolation of older adults and provide a link to other social and rehabilitation services. Our goal is to assist seniors and handicapped adults to maintain their independence and prevent premature institutionalization. Funding: The Monroe City Senior Nutrition Center is a nonprofit organization supported by meal contributions, private donations, fundraising activities, the Northeast Area Agency on Aging, the United Way, and various grants. Volunteers are the heart of our program. They assist us with meal delivery to the homebound, food preparation, clerical, fundraising, and special events. Our program has over 300 unduplicated volunteers from age 7 to 100.
