the shelter: the Shelter is a safe, dormitory-style home for 80 men, women and children. There are two dorms: one for men, and one for women and children. The campus also includes common areas, a dining room, a commercial kitchen, a playground and garden.
Clients that first step onto the campus have a three weeks to find a full time job. After that, they are required to maintain a full time position during their stay at Our House. Throughout their time at Our House, they are encouraged to take full advantage of all Our House programs, using the Education, Workforce, Client Services, Case Management, and Childrens Programs to better their chances in sustainability once they leave the programs. In return, Our House residents have a responsibility to pay a small maintenance fee, save most of their earnings, and participate in daily chores.
Residents can stay up to two years. They are encouraged to stay at least six months to get the full benefits of the programs.
family housing
Residents of the Our House Shelter can apply to be part of the Family House, an on-campus apartment style housing program. Family House members enjoy increased privacy, privileges and responsibilities.
There are 13 units: each room is for one family, one married couple, or two or three adult roommates. A communal kitchen allows residents to cook their own meals for private family dinners; there is a common living room for relaxing and socializing. This is also where single fathers with children live.
To be eligible for Family Housing, you must either be a current Our House resident or a homeless single father with children. Individuals and families apply by filling out the Our House Family Housing application. Acceptance is contingent on Family House availability as well as suitability for the program. Applicants need, potential to succeed, willingness to commit to the program, and past performance in Our House programs are all considered. If you are interested in applying, please print out this form and hand it in to your case manager.
Re-entry Program
Within the Career Center, there is a program specifically targeted to clients with past criminal history. The Reentry Program focuses on specific barriers unique to these clients situations. When you enroll, you will meet with a case manager to discuss your immediate needs and long-term goals. You and your case manager will work together to develop an action plan for success, with emphasis on employment, training, housing, and financial stability.
In addition to accessing all that the Career Center offers, program participants receive one-on-one guidance in building a career plan and navigating potential obstacles to employment. This includes assistance in sealing past convictions and coaching on how to discuss a criminal history in job search scenarios. With the help of the Reentry Program, ex-offenders put their past behind them and look forward to a brighter future.
