The Center first opened its doors October 15, 1967 at 100 South Main Street here in St. Albans, (formerly Bray's Market). At the time, the Messenger reported that the new center was spacious and arranged as a sitting room with several easy chairs and a colored TV and an AM-FM Radio and reading material. There were card tables and a full kitchen. Attendees were encouraged to bring their own sandwiches, but the Center provided soup, cookies, and coffee or tea. Currently the Center is housed at the former Messenger Street School where several of the current members and their children attended school. Pictures of some of the former classes adorn the walls of the Center. At the present time the Center has over 400 members of which 200+ are lifetime members (over the age of 82). Serving meals has always been a part of the Center and the number of attendees for the meals has increased from around 25 to 40-50. Nearly 100 attend the various Holiday meals. As in the past, cards, crafting, exercise, and socializing remain a big part of the Center's activities.
